This Saturday, March 31st, is World Backup Day, a day where IT professionals raise awareness and educate people about the importance of securing your data. Losing data can not only have a major impact on businesses but can also be a traumatic experience for an individual if the data lost is personal or sensitive.

How much data do you produce?

Memory in any device is in high demand. Think about what a device’s memory was 10 years ago versus now. The demand gets higher and higher because the multiple devices we carried before are now compacted into our phones. Add up your videos, pictures, and other media… It’s a lot!

A recent press release from World Backup Day states that “People now create and generate over 1.8 zettabytes of data per year, And with much of that being personal info, photos, and videos being stored in digital form, it is important that we begin to make backups of our precious data.  Backing up your data is one of those easy-to-do procedures that many people ignore.”

There are many ways to back up your data.

At home, you can use software built into your operating system to create a backup of anything on your PC. You can then store that information on an external drive or send it to the cloud if you have storage. If you are looking for something more hands free, then there are many services out there that can make this entire process extremely easy.

During the backup process, make sure you practice good safety.

  1. Set strong passwords – Passwords should be a mixture capital and lowercase letters, symbols, and numbers.
  2. Change your password frequently
  3. Do not reuse your passwords
  4. Backup to a trusted website and cloud – read reviews and check their certifications

Just remember, data can be lost in a moment. Backup your information to make sure you don’t become part of a statistic.
